Well, I didn’t, but after both of my daughters completed completely different programs with such amazing experiences. I have to share..
My youngest daughter Ariella chose a gap year program through Masa Israel that allowed her to take classes at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem as a guest student after graduating high school in the States. She really found herself during that time and decided to apply and was accepted into their Photography department. Now, this year, we are thrilled that she completed her studies. In her case, she decided to remain in Israel, but Gap year programs are great regardless of what University your child prefers.
Why should I consider a Gap Year?
- Allows an opportunity to explore and find themselves before committing to a school or specific course of study. How many 18 year olds have a clue, (I know I didn’t).
- Many top ranked schools encourage this path. In fact, in some cases, students have been accepted, then allowed to postpone starting their studies for up to a year.
- How about this..- some students, initially not accepted into their school of choice, were allowed to re-apply after a gap year or completion of an Internship, then accepted. So the possibilities are really limitless
My eldest daughter Naomi chose a completely different path. She entered an internship program in Israel after completing her University studies in the States called Onward Israel created by the Jewish Agency specifically for those have gone on Taglit-Birthright and other programs in Israel. The internship programs are normally 6-10 weeks and provide an an opportunity for participants to gain invaluable hands on job experience for those just starting their careers.
With more than 70 programs addressing the interests and concerns of Jewish young adults entering the workforce, Onward Israel creates professional connections that last a lifetime. A huge added bonus is that participants spend that time in Israel giving them an opportunity to strengthen their faith and ties to the Jewish homeland.
As always, I share our personal experiences because I truly believe in this Programs. They have worked for us. There is literally something for everyone and worth a serious look.
