Israel is an amazing place for a variety of reasons. It holds a special place in the hearts and minds of people from all religions and backgrounds, and tells the story of over two millennia of human history.

Because Israel is such a small place, you can reach many amazing destinations within a short drive. I continually find it fascinating that in a half day's travel by car, you can pass from mountains to coastal plains, and into barren desert.

As a local, the following have become second nature, but I will still share with you a few of my most invaluable Israel Travel Dos and Don'ts:

Dos:

• Do remember to drink plenty of water, especially during the hot season (June through November).
• Do make sure you have a current valid passport in case you want to travel into Egypt or Jordan.
• Do wear comfortable shoes and clothing (light layers); also a hat that will provide sun protection.
• Do plan ahead and carry a good map. I recommend renting or buying a GPS to carry in the car. They are relatively inexpensive and invaluable if you are unfamiliar with the area.
• Do carry a Hebrew translator or phrasebook (iPhone app or booklet) when traveling away from major cities. I bought a hand held model about the size of a cell phone and found it invaluable.
• Do rent a pre-paid or pay-as-you go cell phone. I found the best cell phone rental deals with good overseas rates at the airport.
• Do make sure women in your group are wearing long sleeves and pants when walking through religious areas.

Don'ts:

• Don't forget sunscreen. Israel is a sunny place with a very high average daily U.V. rating.
• Don't worry about the dress code in Israel unless you're visiting the holy sites.
• Don't go anywhere without your cell phone. It is relatively inexpensive and you can even call overseas.
• Don't plan to return from the north on a Saturday evening unless you are prepared to sit in traffic for a few hours.
• Don't forget to make your hotel reservations ahead of time and confirm beforehand.
