Though you'll find plenty of high end 4 & 5 star Israel hotels, resorts, and luxury boutique hotels, just a handful of them actually live up to international standards. In my experience, the best family deals are usually hidden away at the smaller hotels: The rural bed and breakfasts (also known as Zimmers or Zimmerim), kibbutz country lodging, youth hostels and short term rental deals for Israel apartments.

If you are touring the major cities of Israel like Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv and Eilat for a few days - a hotel is definitely the way to go. But if you're planning on following the local hiking routes, exploring the streams of northern Israel, or maybe even taking a jeep tour in the Negev Desert - the best deals are sprinkled among hundreds of Zimmer B&Bs or kibbutz country lodgings.

My personal favorite is the Zimmer B&Bs. Every year we go away with friends or family and choose a Zimmer to stay in - the kids are free to explore, play and run around without the restrictions typically found at urban hotels.

The laid-back feeling that we have at the end of an adventure filled day sitting around the picnic table, eating a BBQ meal, and just hanging out is unbeatable.
